George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has expressed his deep disappointment that the European Commission has decided to open bilateral talks with Brazil and other South American countries to allow cheap meat products to flood the European Market.

Mr Lyon had hoped to get some answers from the European Agriculture Commissioner at a meeting of the Agriculture Committee but Commissioner Ciolos was unable to appear in person to explain the Commission's decision.

Commenting, Mr Lyon said:

"I am deeply disappointed that Commissioner Ciolos could not come before the Parliament and explain why the Commission has decided to enter into negotiations which have the potential to sink the Scottish beef industry.

"He should have faced up to MEPs and told us exactly what he intends to do to defend the interests of European livestock farmers in these talks and where his red lines will be drawn.

"I am all for further trade liberalisation but I will not stand by and see the Scottish industry sacrificed with all the serious consequences that would bring.

"We need to hear from the Commissioner on this issue. For too long he has been silent on the big issues of the day.

"It is time he spoke up and reassured farmers that he is on their side and willing to fight their corner."
