Commenting on the launch of Labour's manifesto, Fred Mackintosh, prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh South said: "Gordon Brown may talk about a "future fair for all" but the reality is that the gap between rich and poor has widened under Labour.
"The poorest 20% of the population now pay a higher proportion of their income in tax than the richest. That might be ok if you are a millionaire banker, but I'm afraid it doesn't seem very fair to me.
"This Labour Government has presided over the worst economic downturn in 30 years, and a little over a year ago was forced into an embarrassing fudge when it tried to double tax for the lowest earners in our society
"Only the Liberal Democrats have pledged to rebalance the tax system by raising the income tax threshold to £10,000, cutting the average working age person's tax bill by £700 and cutting pensioners' income tax bills by £100.
"With only 405 votes between Labour and the Liberal Democrats it will take more than empty promises to save Labour in Edinburgh South."
Notes:
Fred Mackintosh is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh South the ninth most marginal constituency in Britiain with just 405 votes separating Labour and the Liberal Democrats. In October 2009 a major poll by Politics Home predicted that Edinburgh South would be a Lib Dem gain at the next General Election.
