Commenting on the report out today suggesting that Scotland's hydro potential could be double the amount previously estimated, Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
"This report is further evidence of the massive potential Scotland, and in particular the Highlands, has as a renewables energy powerhouse.
"Hydro power is a proven and reliable form of clean, green energy. Unfortunately it is too often assumed that a glass ceiling has been reached with hydro. This report is the latest evidence that this view is ill founded.
"Ministers must consider what infrastructure requires to be developed - often in remote or fragile areas - to enable the potential of hydro to be reached.
"It is important also that, wherever possible, the inclusion of pump storage systems is given proper consideration in any new stations.
"I welcome this report and urge Ministers to make sure that Scotland's hydro potential becomes a hydro reality."
