In response to news that the Free maps for 11-year-olds scheme, sponsored by Ordinance Survey, is taking place again this year, Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale MSP, Jeremy Purvis is encouraging schools to request their free maps.

The scheme distributes maps free of charge to all schools if they request them. The aim is to raise awareness of local geography and aspects of citizenship by providing as many Primary 7 students as possible with maps to keep. In 2008 the scheme provided 52,408 maps across Scotland and it is hoped that the participation will be even higher this year.

Commenting, Jeremy Purvis said:

"I am very pleased that already 14 primary schools in the Borders have signed up to this scheme. Local geography is extremely important and the scheme will go a long way to instilling this knowledge in youngsters.

"MSPs are able to track which schools are participating online so I will be able to keep up on the progress and hope to speak to pupils about local geography when they come and visit me at the Parliament."
