Commenting on Lord Sutherland's call to re-introduce tuition fees in Scotland, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"The Scottish Government broke its promise to students over debt. They can't do the same to Scottish universities.
"The First Minister's Council of Economic Advisors recommended that student fees be looked at and the government said it accepted the argument in part.
"This will set alarm bells ringing for students that the SNP is going to hit them with fees.
"We need to know where the Government is going. They set up a Tripartite Group on universities. It's hardly met and it doesn't include any student voices.
"We need to know if this group shares Lord Sutherland's opinions."
