Commenting after attending the Scottish Government's alcohol summit in Edinburgh today (Monday), Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"This conference highlighted the need for action to tackle the hugely damaging effects of alcohol abuse in Scotland. It impacts on our health, on relationships, on crime levels and on our economy and society.
"SNP Ministers still do not seem to realise, however, how important it is to create a culture change in Scotland's relationship with alcohol.
"Minimum pricing will not tackle deprivation levels that are at the heart of the challenge of alcohol abuse. It doesn't answer the key question of what makes people drink themselves stupid in the first place.
"More must be done to make people, particularly young people, aware of the dangers of alcohol abuse.
"But, it is also clear that supermarket advertising and the gap between on-sale and off-sale alcohol prices need to be resolved."
