Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, has welcomed the publication of a new map showing which areas of Scotland have the highest levels of the naturally-occurring radioactive gas radon and has said that anyone living in the parts of Orkney with the higher levels should consider taking up the Government's offer of a free survey.
The map shows some part of the Orkney Mainland to have a higher than five percent chance of houses having radon levels above the Health Protection Agency Action level. Homes in these areas are offered free testing by the Scottish Government.Liam McArthur MSP: Orkney
Commenting, Liam McArthur said, "I am pleased that this information has been published. While it is a matter of concern that parts of Orkney have above average radon levels, this is not entirely unexpected and it is useful to have the detailed map. Anyone in an area with the higher levels, who is concerned, should consider taking up the Government's offer of a free survey. This should either allay their concerns or allow them to get advice on remedial action."
