The impact of EU rules on Scottish agriculture was up for discussion today when Scottish Liberal Democrats Elspeth Attwooll MEP and George Lyon met with regional representatives of the NFU Scotland.
Two meetings took place - the first at Feoch Farm in Darvel, North Ayrshire and the second at Perth's Huntingtower Hotel; and on the agenda were key issues including electronic sheep tagging, pesticides and animal transport.
Commenting afterwards, Elspeth Attwooll MEP said:
"I am always delighted to meet with representatives of NFUS, whether here at home in Scotland or out in Brussels. It is the best possible way of making sure that I'm aware of all the issues affecting farmers across Scotland, so that I can be of real assistance to them in my work as an MEP."
George Lyon, number one on the Scottish Liberal Democrat list for the forthcoming European elections, added:
"As a livestock farmer myself I appreciate the concerns that many farmers have about the impact of EU regulation on farming in Scotland, and as a European candidate I am fully committed to doing everything I can to help the industry."
Jim McLaren, President of NFU Scotland, said:
"Meetings with our MEPs are always crucial as there is an endless stream of complicated legislation emanating from the EU.
"The European Parliament elections are just over three months away and NFUS members are very lucky to have the opportunity to brief sitting MEPs and candidates on a number of issues before these take place."
