Commenting on the news that almost £13 million have been seized by police in operations against serious crime over the past year, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown said:
"Liberal Democrats strongly back action to target the people behind the illegal drugs trade who profit from the misery of drug addicts.
"I am concerned, however, that the amounts seized and the numbers charged barely scratch the surface of the problem. We know that levels of addiction to hard drugs are significantly higher in parts of Scotland than in other parts of the United Kingdom.
"We must redouble our efforts to smash the criminal rings who traffic in this kind of misery. However, I also want to see action taken to address the root causes of drug related crime to make young people more resistant to dabbling in highly addictive drugs in the first place."
