Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP has urged the Government to focus on tackling the root causes of crime and cutting the number of breach applications for community service orders.
Figures published today show that 2,161community service orders resulted in a breach application last year. This accounts for 35 per cent of all community service orders issued between 2007/08 and is a 14 per cent rise on the previous year.
Commenting Mr Brown said:
"It is unacceptable that 35 per cent of those issued with community service orders have broken the conditions of their sentence. Ministers must ensure that community service orders are swiftly implemented and effectively imposed in order to reduce this figure.
"Liberal Democrats want to see the government focus on tackling the root causes of crime, such as drugs, alcohol and poverty. This would reduce the amount of crime committed in the first place and free up resources to tackle reoffending and the number of breach applications."
